Cambridge 9709 Grade Thresholds: How They Are Set and What They Tell You

What a Grade Threshold Is

A grade threshold is the minimum raw mark on a component that earns a given grade in that specific session. It is published per component and per session, after the exam has been marked.

Two things follow from that, and both matter.

• A threshold is set after the papers are marked, not before. Nobody, including your teacher, knows this session’s threshold while you are sitting the exam.
• A threshold belongs to one component in one session. Last year’s number describes last year’s paper. It is history, not a forecast.

How Cambridge Sets Them

The point of a threshold is fairness across sessions. Two papers on the same syllabus are never exactly equal in difficulty. If Cambridge used a fixed pass mark, students would be rewarded or punished for the luck of which paper they drew. So the mark required moves instead, to keep the standard fixed.

In broad terms, the process combines evidence about how demanding the paper turned out to be with evidence about the cohort that sat it, then examiners set the mark that represents the same standard of performance as in previous sessions. Cambridge’s Code of Practice puts it directly: the evidence considered includes both evidence about the difficulty of the assessment and evidence about the ability of the cohort.

Why the Number Moves Every Session

• The paper was harder or easier than the last one. Same syllabus, different questions, different demand. A harder paper pulls the threshold down.
• The cohort differs. Entry numbers, the mix of centres, and the mix of countries are not identical session to session.
• Variants are separate papers. Paper 11, 12 and 13 are different question papers sat by different candidates, so each gets its own threshold.
• Series differ. The March, June and November series are separate awarding exercises.

A Low Threshold Does Not Mean an Easy Paper

This is the single most misread signal in the whole subject, so be blunt about it. It means the opposite.

If the mark needed for an A dropped, that is Cambridge compensating for a paper that performed harder than usual. Students scored fewer marks, so fewer marks were required. The grade you would have got is unchanged. You did not need less maths. You needed the same maths against a tougher paper.

The reverse trap is just as common. A high threshold does not mean the examiners were harsh. It usually means the paper was more accessible and a lot of students scored well.

Thresholds Are Per Component, Not Per Qualification

Your 9709 grade does not come from one threshold. It comes from your total across the components you sat. Cambridge publishes that overall threshold too, in the same document as the component ones, under an option code for each valid combination of papers. For the full A Level the total is out of 250, and it is the only place an A* appears.

• Each component has its own thresholds, published separately.
• Papers are not equal in weight. On the full A Level, Pure 1 and Pure 3 carry 30% each, while Papers 4, 5 and 6 carry 20% each.
• A strong Pure 1 can carry a weaker applied paper, because of that weighting.
• Your component marks are not rescaled. For 9709 the raw totals already carry the published weighting: 75 + 75 + 50 + 50 is 250, which is exactly 30/30/20/20.
• The overall threshold is the sum of the component thresholds for your combination, occasionally a mark lower at the top grades.
• Two students with the same total can still land on different grades, because the components they sat had different thresholds, not because their marks were scaled.

What You Should Actually Do With Threshold Data

There is a legitimate use for thresholds. It is narrow, and it is not “find out what mark I need”.

• Use the historical range as a safety margin, not a target. Aim comfortably above the top of the range you see, so a hard paper cannot catch you.
• Use them to sanity-check a practice paper. If you scored a mark that would have been an A in three of the last six sessions and a B in the other three, you are on the boundary, not safely inside it.
• Use them per component. If your Pure 3 practice marks sit far below your Pure 1 marks, that gap is where the grade is being lost.
• Do not use one session. A single number tells you about a single paper. The spread across sessions is the only honest picture.

Grade Thresholds by Session

Pure 1 and Pure 3 components only. Thirteen sessions come from Cambridge’s published threshold tables; four retired sessions (Feb/Mar 2020, Oct/Nov 2020, Feb/Mar 2021, Oct/Nov 2021) are no longer on Cambridge’s index and were taken from named mirrors. Every Pure component in every session below is out of 75. Columns are A to E, because A* does not exist at component level.

Cambridge publishes the threshold tables itself, free, after each session. Your school’s exams officer can also confirm thresholds for the components you sat. Cambridge publishes one PDF per syllabus per series, so look for the Mathematics 9709 file within the series you want.
